there always seems to be this wild furore about art and craft, or art and design, or photography, and what it is and what it isn’t. artists are supposed to hate designers for their piffling around, whilst the designers lampoon the artists lofty aspirations. certain things are looked down upon by certain people, with others holding certain things with the deepest of reverence.
well here all this
is pushed to one side for a moment, what I am concerned with is the energy of the creation
process itself, in whatever form it may take.
I am engaged by ideas, aspirations, and connections.
spurred on by the bombardment of conflicting thoughts, theories and suggestions.
delayed by caprice and whim.
and energized by substance and sum.
I am not implying
that all art is good art and that anything thrust from an artisan’s bosom will
have meaning, but I do say that anything has the possibility of being good art.
this possibility
relies on the work being considered and containing craft, and by craft I don’t
necessarily mean the romantic view of a woodworker at his lathe, or a sculptor
dexterously chiselling away at carrara marble, although of course this is
craft. moreover I feel it can happen in a more mundane way with whatever
materials the artist may have at hand. importantly the craft relies on the
designer looking. to look at the world and to convey whatever he or she sees.
although it must be remembered that to truly see something requires not just
one’s eyes but also one’s mind.
in short, in these pages you will find my attempts to order and to make sense of, to understand and to affect the world I am living through.
this is then, with neither lofty leanings, high meaning nor mean sprit, is my art and my craft.
